Amsterdam's Red-Light Getting A Cleanup - Say It Aint So!

| , , ,

Why is everyone trying to ruin a good thing? It saddens me to think I have to live in a time when Europe's Sin capital wants to change its image. Before the legal weed, the sketchy coke dealers and the obnoxious college kids Amsterdam had two things: Prostitutes and the Sailors who loved them. When Amsterdam was a major trading city with a steady stream of Sailors ready to fight, screw or drink anything that came their way - the Red Light District was as they used to say "a necessary evil". Well now the sailors are replaced with American Frat Boys and the worldwide Stoner set - otherwise the situation is about the same. So why change it?

Amsterdam is one of my favorite places in the world, even without the drugs. But it's the drugs and the Red Light District that makes Amsterdam the truly magical place that it is. Without the vice, the artists, performers and all the freaky creative people that give A-Dam its color will leave. I see it this way, if you are offended by the rawness of Amsterdam but still want frites, canals and rowhouses why not visit Brugge?
