This new reports says New York City is thinking of forcing an R rating on movies that show people smoking cigarettes. For the record I don't smoke but last I checked it's still legal and this is just the latest witch hunt in the war against smoker's rights.
So NYC thinks that keeping kids from seeing smoking in movies is going to change anything? What about all those New Yorkers that have been forced to the sidewalks to smoke - don't kids have to walk by them everyday? Just another knee-jerk reaction to a minor issue -something we are good at here in the US. This is just another example of a powerful lobby group getting what they want. And these days the anti-smoking lobby is as powerful as Big Tobacco was a few decades ago.
So if smoking is so big a concern in the Big Apple that they need to restrict movies to impressionable youngsters, what else should we restrict to keep kids "safe?" Last I checked violent crime like murder is still a problem in New York City. Although most murder movies are already rated R, kids can see all the murder and violence they want on television with shows like CSI and Cold Case.
I watched thousands of movies, TV shows and individuals smoke in my life. I even used to walk to the store as an 8-year old to buy my mom her Marlboro Reds. I worked in restaurants where the smoke would overpower the food. I grew up with magazine ads and billboards telling me Newport’s are "Alive with Pleasure". Like I said before I don't smoke-never had. Only a few of my friends still smoke - most quit in their 20's. I was not powerless to make my own decisions on smoking so why do kids today need help?
You can't protect your kids from everything. Hell, your parents probably didn't even try and I bet you turned out OK. I could go off on a hundred tangents but I'll leave it at this: Kids need experience in decision making, not safety blankets.

Goddamn, I've never heard of something so goddamn stupid in my life. Overly sensitive freaks like that have nothing better to worry about. Can't we please round up these psycho-babbling, wimpy, controlling dumb asses and give 'em some electro-shock treatments to set them straight?
Quit trying to "protect" the kids by denying people their rights. "Protecting" the kids is an obvious excuse for your control issues. Want to do something constructive. Be someone that helps kids make their choices by giving them information, and not by forcing your puritan, narrow minded ideas upon them. Hey, if you don't want to see somebody smoking on the big screen, in a bar or on the street, cover your eyes, you worthless wimp! I hate you! End your life now!
Sincerely, and with much charm,
K
well done! And I love the pic of satan. Long Live the D!
Kids should only be protected from bodily harm, other than that they need to learn their own lessons. Parents should be setting rules for their kids not the government, or big business, they already have enough control over our lives.
