Everybody has their own opinion on what this American holiday truly is about. Thanksgiving has been used a part of many people's agenda's for quite a while, from the capitalists in New York with their parade to get people to Christmas shop, to the casino-owning Native Americans, who are taking back what is rightfully theirs - one dollar at a time. Much like they do to Jesus, every splinter group tries to make Thanksgiving their own at the expense of everyone else's viewpoint.
While getting ready to eat some domesticated turkey yesterday I was smoking a big fat joint down in the bunker listening to some hard-core neo-puritan rhetoric on the good ole shortwave radio. Apparently the whole Thanksgiving thing (according to this broadcast) is divine provenance by the God of Israel. It is also the story of the defeat of socialism and apparently God sent out smallpox to kill off the 'savages' so the 'civilized' pilgrims and later Puritans could have space to live. Yeah, Hitler had a name for that, I think he called it Lebensraum
Take a look at what I found on Youtube this morning, just a sampling of the various takes on America's Thanksgiving.
Here is Rush's View and like everything else he does, it's way over the top and glosses over alot of real history:
Here is a Native American Viewpoint, which always paints the Indians as peaceloving, the Europeans always blood thristy. It also glosses over the Native political situation during the pilgrims arrival:
There was much more to that peace treaty first signed with the help of squanto, Massasoit of the Wampanoag needed a powerful ally in the region against enemy tribes like the Pequod. But that kind of goes against the whole myth of peace loving indians that didn't believe in war or property.
Well whatever you believe, the truth, as always, lies somewhere in the middle. Now get out there and due your civic duty and spend some money at the malls!
